چکیده

This paper presents an efficient and robust algorithm for the geometric determination of swept volumes during the simulation of NC−milling (three-axis machining and five-axis machining). The boundary Ψ of the volume swept by a cutter Φ is represented polygonally by using instantaneous helical motions to exactly determine the line of contact between Φ and Ψ. Applying concepts of differential geometry allows a better and more efficient approximation of tool paths. Tool paths are explicitly calculated when a design surface Γ is to be milled along prescribed curves. We also describe how to quickly determine a polygonized representation of the truncated material during the milling process by means of „Γ−buffering“. This polygon-oriented algorithm is perfectly suitable for Boolean subtractions and error assessment. Index Terms – computer aided manufacturing, NC−milling, NC−verification, sweeps, solid modeling, Γ−Buffer. −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− s −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−

Energy Efficiency Analyses of Toolpaths in a Pocket Milling Process

This paper presents an approach to analytically determine the most energy efficient toolpath strategy in mechanical machining. This was achieved by evaluating the electrical energy requirement of the NC codes generated for the zag, zigzag, and rectangular contour toolpath strategies. The analytical method was validated by performing pocket milling on AISI 1018 steel with the considered toolpath...

High accuracy NC milling simulation using composite adaptively sampled distance fields

We describe a new approach to shape representation called a composite adaptively sampled distance field (composite ADF) and describe its application to NC milling simulation. In a composite ADF each shape is represented by an analytic or procedural signed Euclidean distance field and the milled workpiece is given as the Boolean difference between distance fields representing the original workpi...

NC end milling optimization using evolutionary computation

Typically, NC programmers generate tool paths for end milling using a computer-aided process planner but manually schedule “conservative” cutting conditions. In this paper, a new evolutionary computation technique, particle swarm optimization (PSO), is proposed and implemented to efficiently and robustly optimize multiple machining parameters simultaneously for the case of milling. An artificia...

NC milling simulation and dimensional verification via dexel representation

A method and apparatus are presented for five-axis NC milling process simulation and dimensional verification. An algorithm is utilized which employs a dexel representation of the workpiece and milling tool to reduce the complexity of the solid representation and associated Boolean operations. This representation is exploited to obtain high computational efficiency which affords real-time visua...
